In purchasing artwork you should ask yourself three questions:
1. Do I really like the piece (painting, sculpture, glasswork, ceramic art, whatever it may be)?
2. Will it 'compliment' the environment I want to put it in?
3. Is it in my budget?
When I say like it, I mean truly like it? I don't mean 'does it speak to you,' because quite frankly if it did, I might say you should probably reconsider....anything that 'spoke to me' while I am walking by it, sounds a little strange anyway and may be time to leave that store. The phrase has been a bit overdone and even sounds very comical now. *Sorry if your last work of art spoke to you...I'd say it's probably time to replace that talking art anyway and get something new that is a little less vocal. :)
When I say 'compliment' your environment, I mean just that....I didn't say 'match' your environment. Big difference there! Matchy-matchy went out with, let me think....Garanimals. Remember those? Kids clothes that had inter-matching pieces that you could mix and match, even the tags told you what to match with what. It was cute at the time (and even helpful) until it got actually annoying, (sorry if Garanimals are still sold today, I am so out-of-the-loop on that, I just wanted to make a point). *Note - most artists say and feel that 'good art' does not match or have to match your furniture...something to keep in mind.
And, is it in my budget? Well, if you have a 'budget,' like so many of us swear we'll do, eventually....then you're better off than most of us (ok, I'll just speak for myself). Let's face it, art is not exactly a 'need' item, but in reality it can actually enhance your life and certainly spruce up your everyday environment...for some people it can be enjoyable & whimsical, for others comforting and/or 'you have simply got to have that item and can't live without it' feeling. *That one you may want to be careful of....those items are usually NOT in your real or eventual budget at all....in fact, those items often 'break the bank,' figuratively and literally! You know if you can afford something or not...yes you do.
